Top 5 Foods To Avoid + 5 Foods To Eat

Always buying local fresh foods from Farmer’s markets or elsewhere can really help you improve your health, but sometimes this isn’t realistic.  So here are five foods to avoid and minimize if local farmer’s markets or local fresh food isn’t an option.

Food #1:  Low-Fat Foods

Low-fat foods is a product that you have to watch closely.  When it says “low fat” it doesn’t always mean that the food is low calorie.  You should always check the label and see just how many calories are in that food.  Many people assume “low fat” foods means lower calories so they tend to eat more food, but then read the label and find out that this isn’t the case.

Food #2:  Sugar-Free Foods

Sugar-free foods were created to help with people that eat too much sugar or are at risk for developing diabetes.  They usually are lower in calories and have no sugar.

However, when you look at the label there is something interesting you will see.  It is something called sugar alcohols and it is made from sugar products.  They tend to carry 1.5 to 4 calories per gram so you may be thinking you are getting a sugar free product, but that may not be the case.  Another unwanted side effect is cramping, bloating and GI issues if you consume too much.

Food #3:  Commercial Smoothies

Most people think a smoothie is always healthy, but when you break it down they may have a lot of hidden calories from extra sugar.  Sometimes you will find that they are made with ice cream which of course balloon the calories, sugar and fat content.

Advice:  Make your smoothies at home and leave the commercial smoothies for someone else.

Food #4:  Commercial Yogurts

Yogurt is another product that is considered a healthy natural food.  Look carefully at the label and many times the first few ingredients are different forms of sugar.  All this extra sugar can lead to an increase in weight and make it more difficult to lose fat.  Make sure you choose a yogurt that doesn’t contain these extra sugars.

Food #5:  Energy Drinks

Energy drinks have been advertised as giving you an extra boost during the day.  Look carefully at the label because some use sugar as the energy component.  Stop and look before you drink to make sure you are not consuming a boatload of calories.  Here is a great solution for the energy drink fix.
